So here's what I've been working on the past couple weeks! Sorry for the picture quality... they're with our new camera, but I didn't bother taking it off auto. ;)
And a couple close-ups to show the texture:
General pattern is a real simple cluster -- sc 1, dc 2 in next hole, sk 1, sc 1, dc 2 in next hole, sk 1... etc. That creates a nice puffy pattern that I've never worked with before but that I really like!
I'm probably... 1/4 of the way done? Maybe 1/3? So quite a bit more left, and I definitely need to buy a few more skeins of yarn...
Cuuuuute! I love the stitch pattern! All I can do at the moment is plain, granny squares (learned the other weekend) & a simple flower, haha! Considering almost all my current knitting projects are lacework & cables, I'm feeling quite limited in my crochet abilities right now! That said, I do have 2 big crochet blankets in the works - a pink+blue+white granny square baby blanket for a friend due in May & a giant basic-stitch blue & red striped blanket/play-rug for Gabe (that will likely never actually get finished because I have 30-something balls of wool to use up in it, LOL!).
ReplyDeleteThanks! :) Haha, I was resigned to the same for a long time -- I'm still learning to read patterns, so when I get something like this right, I'm like, YESSSSS. I can't wait to see those blankets! Love the idea of a play rug, are you just stitching a bunch of stuff together? That sounds almost magical. :)
ReplyDeleteI didn't know you knew how to crochet. Cool :)
ReplyDeleteYup! :) Still learning -- I don't know anything but rectangles at the moment, though I did make a spaceship with some success! -- but I find it to be a lot of fun. Good way to keep my mind busy!
ReplyDeleteHah, I can't read a pattern until *after* someone shows me how to do it... like, reverse engineering almost! I'll try & get pics soonish! The play rug is just the basic crochet stitch, whatever that one is called? I have a HEAP of wool (I think it was 37 balls total) that my Nan got "from a dead lady" (yeah...) & thought was "horrible colours" (blue & red), so she gave it to me. It's old, meaning it's too scratchy to make clothes from (says the girl who was made to wear really scratchy wool growing up & thinks that her baby deserves only the super-soft best, haha), so I figured I'd make a blanket/rug that can either be used as an extra layer on his bed, or to play on outside, or play Lego on to make it easier to clean up, whatever. I just do 4 rows of blue, then switch colour & do 4 rows of red, then 4 rows of blue & so on. It's, like, 200+ stitches long though, so it's going to be MASSIVE!
ReplyDeleteHaha! That makes sense. :) I watch a lot of YouTube videos even still to learn the different stitches. That's how I learned this one! I hope to move on to baby hats and stuff next -- I have these two skeins of yarn just BEGGING to become coordinating hats and booties. They're a teal color that really goes nicely with the blanket.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, that sounds perfect! I love the idea of turning all that into a play rug. 200 stitches is AWESOME! What gauge hook are you using? I think mine is a 3.5 and I have about 130 or so stitches across, which is making a huge blanket on its own. A bigger gauge and 200+ stitches will produce a HUGE play rug!!
Hah, yep! YouTube is how I learned to do the flower! I can't wait to graduate to hats (sure, I'm a pro at *knitting* hats now, but I want to learn to crochet them too because crochet ones are so different & then I can do those cute animal-shaped ones - owls, etc)!
ReplyDeleteIt's a 4.0mm hook - the wool is a bit thinner than I'd normally use with that size hook/needle (I think it's a 5 or 6ply), but it's the size called for on the ball band & it looks pretty good! It's already *long* enough to be at least a child's bed cover (possibly an adult's bed cover), but it's not very wide yet, so it just looks like an oversized scarf/wrap, haha!
Ok, out of curiousity, I measured it! It's currently about 155cm x 45cm (61in x 17.7in)... given how much wool is left I'm hoping/guessing it'll be square-ish when done, haha!
ReplyDeleteThat makes sense about the size. That blanket is HUGE right now, insane!! It's almost as tall as I am! :) It's going to make a GREAT play rug.
ReplyDeleteAnd now you're giving me inspiration for these skeins of dark green yarn that have just been hanging around... whee!
How tall are you? I'm 5'6" & when I hold it straight up, it comes up to my nose, LOL!
ReplyDeleteDooo iiiit! No such thing as too many blankets!
5'4". :) It would probably come to my forehead.
ReplyDeleteAnd good point! I could probably use it to learn more crochet stitches, anyway!
